Therapy Isn’t Linear
Dear You,
If you’ve ever asked yourself, “Why am I feeling stuck again?” or “Shouldn’t I be further along by now?” — this letter is for you.
Healing is not a straight line. It rarely moves in tidy, upward progress. Therapy can bring clarity and relief one week, and stir up discomfort the next. That doesn’t mean you’re failing. It means you’re doing the work.
-Smita S shukla
Old patterns take time to untangle. Sometimes they show up again just when you thought you’d outgrown them. That’s okay. That’s part of how your mind tests and strengthens new ways of being.
Progress in therapy often looks like:
- Catching a thought a little sooner
- Reacting a little less strongly
- Being a little more honest with yourself
- Feeling safe enough to feel more
Even if you return to the same issue again, you’re not in the same place. You’re revisiting it with more awareness, more courage, and often — more compassion.
So the next time it feels like you’re going backward, pause.
Look again. You might just be moving through a spiral, not a circle.
You’re still moving forward — just not in a straight line.
With warmth,
Your Therapist
