Thinking of Ending Therapy? Let’s Talk About It.

Dear You,

“How we end is just as important as how we begin.”

Therapy is deeply personal work. It asks a lot of you — time, emotional energy, courage. And just like any relationship, the therapeutic relationship also goes through seasons.

Sometimes, clients choose to take a break. Sometimes, they’re not sure therapy is the right fit. And sometimes, it simply feels easier to disappear.

But here’s a gentle request, from one human to another:
Please don’t ghost your therapist.

You’re Allowed to End Therapy — But Let’s Do It With Care

You have every right to stop therapy, for any reason. Life gets busy. The timing may no longer feel right. Maybe your needs have shifted, or perhaps we’re not the right fit. All of that is okay.

But therapy is a relationship.
It may be structured and boundaried, but it’s still built on trust and care.
And relationships — especially healing ones — deserve closure.

Ending therapy with intention can be a meaningful part of your growth.
It’s not just about saying goodbye — it’s about how you say goodbye. That can be a powerful space to practice self-respect, honesty, and emotional courage.

Why Clients Sometimes Ghost (and Why It Hurts)

Ghosting — leaving without a word — often comes from discomfort. Maybe it feels awkward. Maybe you’re unsure of your feelings or afraid of disappointing your therapist. Or maybe avoidance is something you’re actively working on in therapy.

As therapists, we understand.
But even when we understand, it can still feel painful.
Not because we take it personally — but because we’ve walked that journey with you. And we care about your story, your well-being, and your closure.

Let’s Normalize Talking About the Urge to Leave

Here’s something you might not know:
Therapists are trained to talk about this.

If you’re feeling stuck, unsure, or disconnected — that’s not something to hide. It’s something we welcome into the room.

Naming the desire to leave can lead to one of the most honest and healing conversations you’ll have in therapy.

You can start simply with:

“I’m not sure therapy is helping right now.”
“I’ve been thinking about stopping, but I’m not sure how to say it.”
“Can we talk about how things are going? Something feels off.”

No perfect script. Just your truth, shared openly.

Leaving With Intention Is Growth, Too

If the time has come to end therapy — and you know it’s right — let’s talk about it together.

A closing session gives you the space to:

✔ Reflect on what you’ve learned
✔ Make space for any emotions around the ending
✔ Plan for future support if needed
✔ Say goodbye with clarity and care

Final sessions aren’t a formality.
They are a rite of passage — honoring all the work you’ve done.

You Deserve That Sense of Completion

Therapy doesn’t always need to last forever. But when it ends well, it leaves you stronger. It teaches you how to navigate endings with grace — and that’s a gift you’ll carry into every part of your life.

So if you’re feeling unsure, let’s talk.
If you’re certain it’s time to move on, let’s honor that, too.

You’re not alone in this process.
You never were.

With warmth,
Smita
Your Therapist
