When Therapy Feels Stuck

Dear You,

There may come a time in therapy when things feel… quiet. Slower. Maybe even frustrating.

You might find yourself thinking, “Am I getting anywhere?” or “I don’t know what to talk about anymore.” You might feel like therapy isn’t helping the way it once did — or that you’re circling the same issues without resolution.

If that’s happening, I want you to know:
It doesn’t mean something is wrong.
It might mean something is shifting.

Periods where therapy feels slow or “stuck” often arrive right before a new layer begins to emerge. These are the in-between spaces — not quite where you were, and not yet where you’re going.

And sometimes, the very feeling of being stuck is something important to explore. Does it remind you of past experiences? Is it a familiar way of protecting yourself from vulnerability or change?

The best thing you can do in these moments is bring the stuckness into the room. Let it be seen. Let it be talked about.

You don’t need to perform progress in therapy.
You don’t need to arrive with something “productive” to say.
You’re allowed to come in confused, bored, frustrated, tired — all of that is still therapy.

The quiet stretches often hold more than we realize.
And just by staying, showing up honestly, you’re doing the work.

With steadiness,
Your Therapist
